Dave Meltzer on Hell In A Cell’s Main Event: “The Referee is Giving a Speech About Sportsmanship?”

Hell In A Cell

The WWE had managed to leave out the crowd reaction to Seth Rollins at the beginning of the show. In recent weeks, Rollins crowd reactions have been getting more and more negative as his feud with fan favorite Bray Wyatt continues.

Dave Meltzer: “Seth does a promo, and it was [not audible] watching but the people were booing Seth. They didn’t turn the crowd noise on. What a shocker.”

On today’s episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer and co-host Bryan Alvarez discussed what went wrong in the main event Hell in a Cell match between Seth Rollins and “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt. The match was thrown out after Seth Rollins hit multiple curbstomps, chairshots, and used numerous weapons under the ring.

Dave Meltzer: “I thought it was a given that Bray Wyatt was going to win. I thought he was going to win in 7 minutes. I thought this was really easy.”

Bryan Alvarez breaks down why the end of the match didn’t make sense:

Bryan Alvarez: “Everybody keeps booing because they think Seth [Rollins] is going to beat this guy… He hits 5 curbstomps and the fans are booing like crazy because they do not want Seth winning this match.

Gets a chair, hits a chairshot, and goes for the pin but gets a one [count.] Gets a ladder, puts a chair on Fiend’s head, hits it with the ladder and he just lays there. Seth puts a chair and a ladder on his head and starts hitting it with a toolbox… Seth goes under the ring and gets a sledge hammer. Now, 10 minutes ago we had the biggest hammer we’ve ever seen and that’s totally okay. But this [smaller] hammer, oh no…”

Dave Meltzer: “It’s a hell in a cell match against a frickin’ monster, and the referee is giving a speech about sportsmanship?”

When the match ended, fans were not happy. As Hell in a Cell went off the air, fans were chanting “bullshit” and “AEW.”
