Opening Segment: Velveteen Dream (c) vs. Buddy Murphy for the nXt North American Championship
Highlights include:
Dream and Murphy trade vice-like side headlocks. They counter one another’s second attempts before kipping up simultaneously. Nice sequence there. Fans are hyped.
Flying head scissors by Murphy! Dream stumbles out, slides back in on his knees and mocks Murphy. He brags a bit and then gets a knee in the face by Murphy. 1-2- Dream kicked out! Close call.
Murphy with the somersault plancha on Dream to the outside. He rotates that into another roll, slowing down at the top of the ramp. Is this the Buddy Murphy show? Dude is getting a chance to shine tonight.
Sleeper hold by Murphy weakens Dream all the way to the mat. Fans cheer and clap as Dream tries to escape. Murphy transitions the hold to a side headlock. More clapping brings Dream to his feet. Still, Murphy holds on. Dream forces Murphy back into the turnbuckle a few times to break the hold.
Murphy charges at Dream in the corner, straight into a superkick to the jaw!
Dream counters Murphy’s offense, knocking him down with dropkicks and double axe handles, even one to the outside. Dream ascends the turnbuckle again…jumps over Murphy and rolls through. Codebreaker!
1-2-…NO! Murphy kicks out.
Sweet roll into a fireman’s carry on Murphy. Dream can’t execute it and gets kicked in the face for his efforts. Both men with right hands as they stand on the ropes. Their slugging behaviour crashes to the ringside mats. The referee gets to a 9 count and, just then, both men roll into the ring.
After a bout of boxing, Murphy nails Dream with a DDT. Hooked the leg for the pin but only a 2 count.
Murphy climbs the turnbuckle. Dream joins him there and gets pushed away. Dream leaps back. Front suplex by Murphy! He stays on the ropes for a leaping sunset flip. Dream rolls through! DREAM VALLEY DRIVER. 1-2- kick out by Murphy! Fans are loving this.
Superkick on Dream as he bent over on the second rope. Murphy kicked his head through Dream’s own legs. Then a sitdown powerbomb that, somehow, Dream kicked out of to break the pinfall.
Nasty running knee strike on the apron by Murphy on Dream. Both men crash to the ringside mats. The referee counts to 9. Murphy slides in and out to avoid winning by countout.
On the way into the ring, Fameasser, into a Dream Valley Driver. Purple Rainmaker for the victory. Quite a combo at the end!
Winner, and still NA Champ: Velveteen Dream via pinfall in 15 minutes
2 cool points for Dream. He’s become quite a resilient wrestler, enduring a lot of offense where he seems to be biding his time to execute a finishing combo. There were numerous times in this match where Murphy seemed to have the win. Dream will continue to win fans over with matches like this one.
2 cool points for Murphy who got plenty of time to shine and show off his offense tonight. Like the submission game to begin, but then Murphy was also daring enough to fly from the turnbuckles if needed. SD Live will benefit from his presence.
It’s a Street Profits promo. Ford says this is a special edition of “Street Talk”. They’re going to create opportunities and knock on nXt General Manager William Regal’s door. Ford and Dawkins hype it up a bit, but when the door opens, it’s Hanson and Rowe, the nXt Tag Team Champions.
Rowe says they heard you guys and they took care of it. We’ll see you next week.
Ford and Dawkins are excited about this match: yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!
Second Segment: Johnny Gargano returns to Full Sail as nXt Champion
“Johnny Champion” is the chant from the Full Sail faithful to open up this in-ring speech from Gargano. He says they’ve been waiting a very, very long time for this moment.
This was a long, long, long journey, but Gargano stands here proudly as the champ.
SHOCK THE SYSTEM! Adam Cole is here with Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish. He tells Gargano to shut up. This is about getting lucky. Cole says he beat Gargano in New York. He says he is the uncrowned nXt Champion and Gargano…is a punk!
Gargano asks if Cole has some trouble in his little boy band. Is everything not “’N Sync” right now? Gargano says true that Cole won the first fall, but Gargano made him tap in the second fall…and again in the third fall. That’s a 2-1 score. That’s not just definitive…that’s undisputed! Haha!
Gargano calls Cole out for whining like a spoiled bay-bay. If Cole wants to step in the ring, Gargano will put a few more points up on the scoreboard.
Cole says, okay. He starts to walk down the ramp when Roderick Strong blindsides Gargano with a high knee. The Undisputed Era surround Gargano and beat up on him. Cole picks up the nXt Championship belt and jaws at Gargano a bit before superkicking him to the mat.
nXt referees rush in to beg off the Undisputed Era from further destruction.
Nigel McGuinness rhymes off all of the recently called up nXt stars that got switched up in the Superstar Shakeup.
Third Segment: Dominik Dijakovic vs. Aaron Frye
This match starts and ends with a high kick to the face of Frye, knocking him out.
Winner: Dominik Dijakovic via pinfall in 10 seconds
Post-match, Dijakovic explains he is only here because his family allowed him the opportunity to come to the USA. His blood drives him to opportunity. He sees the North American Championship and tells Velveteen Dream to feast his eyes.
0 cool points for this squash. It did set up a possible match with Velveteen Dream though, and that would merit cool points.
Cathy Kelley catches up with the Undisputed Era backstage. She asks about how the group is getting along. Cole explains that Gargano was caught in their trap tonight. GM Regal walks in and says he spoke with Gargano. Gargano said he wanted to face Roderick Strong, so that match will happen next Wednesday.
Cole’s not too pleased with that, but the others are joking a bit and not too phased about it.
A promo looks at the rivalry between nXt Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler and 2017 Mae Young Tourney Winner Kairi Sane. Their last match could happen tonight; if Sane loses, she will not get another opportunity because she will be moving up to SD Live.
Aliyah and Vanessa Borne are seen complaining about Candice LeRae. They tell her to find a partner with whom to meet them in the ring next week.
Main Event: Shayna Baszler (c) w. Jessamyn Duke & Marina Shafir vs. Kairi Sane for the nXt Women’s Championship
Highlights include:
Sharp spinning punch by Sane lands Baszler on the mat in the turnbuckle area. Sliding D!
Sane with a flying right hand from the top rope, but Baszler gets her shoulders up. Quick start for Sane.
Baszler and Sane each respond with forearm strikes. Powerful knee strike by Baszler for a 2 count.
Yikes. Vicious bicycle knee strike by Baszler in the corner on Sane. Close fall, but Sane doesn’t have much energy on the kickout.
Spear by Sane! It catches Baszler off guard, but Sane’s still in pain and doesn’t attempt a pinfall. Fans cheer on Kairi. Dragon screw leg whip by Sane. She cries out, lifts Baszler up and then trips her for the Anchor submission! Baszler wills herself to the bottom rope and hangs on to start the referee’s count.
InSane Elbow to Baszler’s neck! Sane goes up again, but Baszler with a step up enziguri. Baszler climbs up to the middle rope, tries to lift Sane from the gut. She can’t do it. Baszler receives a double stomp from Sane, but recovers enough to avoid Sane’s flying Kabuki elbow from the apron.
That seems like a turning point. Baszler targets Sane’s right arm. She almost pulls it out of its socket. Sidewinder front suplex slam. 1-2- Sane kicks out! Baszler transitions seamlessly into a side headlock, with a high angle pressure on the shoulder.
The referee consults Sane about her elbow and calls a WWE trainer down to check on her. Io Shirai also rushes down the ramp to check on her friend. Baszler pulls Sane up by the neck and this match will continue.
Baszler is about to smash Sane’s elbow with her foot when Shirai rushes in to push Baszler away. The referee calls for the bell.
Winner: Shayna Baszler via disqualification in 8 minutes
Post-match, Shafir and Duke attack Shirai on the outside. Baszler grabs Sane. Referees are nowhere to be seen as Baszler stomps on Sane’s elbow. All Shirai could do was look on in devastation.
The show ends in boos from the crowd and Shirai checking on Sane in the middle of the ring. Finally, the referee and trainer return, too.
Weird start to the match. Sane surprised Baszler and the Full Sail audience with some quick offense. Crowd doesn’t respond and, honestly, it just wasn’t believable. It seemed telegraphed that Sane was going down here.
1 cool point for Baszler though. When she decided she was there to win, she made it look so easy, like Sane was nothing more than a mosquito to swat. That’s all attitude, posture and ring presence, contributing to that scene.
1 cool point for Shirai. Maybe some people expected to see her, but I thought this was as effective a means as any to draw Shirai back into the title picture. She is the most logical contender, the only of the 3 in the Fatal Four-Way not to get a one-on-one title shot. Only question is will it be a TV match or a TakeOver: San Jose match?
Curious to see how nXt deals with the War Raiders aka Viking Experience in the coming weeks. This is the first time an nXt tag team has been called up while holding the championships. Will they work both or will the Street Profits win next week? Discuss that and more in the comment section below!
