On This Day: 6 Years Ago, the Authority Formed on SummerSlam

On this day 6 years ago, the Authority formed on SummerSlam 2013 in a match between John Cena and Daniel Bryan with Triple H as special guest referee.

The storyline that played out saw John Cena handpick his SummerSlam opponent for the WWE Championship. After polling the fans, Cena picked Daniel Bryan as his challenger. Weeks prior, Vince McMahon berated Daniel Bryan, requesting that he shave his beard and clean himself up. During a match against Wade Barrett, Brad Maddox made himself special guest referee and fast counted for Barrett to win the match. For the championship, Brad Maddox once again offered his services to guest referee.

Triple H responded by declaring himself guest referee instead. To end the segment, Triple H made himself the guest referee for the John Cena and Daniel Bryan SummerSlam match.

The match was won by Daniel Bryan with his Running Knee finisher and pinning Cena for the clean win. During Daniel Bryan’s celebration, Randy Orton came out to cash in his Money in the Bank contract. Right when it appeared that Orton was going to walk away, Triple H pedigreed Daniel Bryan and turned heel. This allowed Orton to pin Daniel Bryan to win the WWE Championship.

Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, and Randy Orton (with occasional appearances from Vince McMahon) formed the Authority. This stable of kayfabe WWE suits would be used to put over Randy Orton, The Shield, and Big Show’s iron clad contract among others.
