A few days ago, NJPW announced that IWGP Heavyweight champion Kazuchika Okada, Intercontinental champion Kota Ibushi, and former champions Jay White and Tetsuya Naito would all be entered into this years G1 Climax, and will be appearing on the tournaments opening day at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. This is the first time NJPW has run the G1 in America in nearly 60 years. However, the announcement comes due to poor ticket sales.
According to the Wrestling Observer, the loss of the top American draws from NJPW (Rhodes, Omega, Young Bucks) has severely hurt NJPW’s chances of running an NBA sized arena on their own as only 62 additional tickets had been sold prior to a massive discount being offered. Since the discount didn’t assist, NJPW went ahead and announced their four biggest stars for the tournament, something that normally doesn’t occur until after their Dominion event later in the summer.
